Candid Captures with Kate

Living remotely often means that Professional Development opportunities are limited, consequently I’m always on the lookout for workshops that I can attend to improve my photography skills.

I’ve been following Kate Collingwood who is an editorial photographer on social media for some time. Not only does she work as a freelance photographer, Kate also hosts photography and styling workshops at various locations.

I recently attended one of her workshops, hosted at her home, and from the moment I arrived and stood in her beautifully furnished sitting room, I knew that this was the workshop for me! Props and painted pieces of plywood were scattered around the living space, ready to be used for flat-lay photography… I felt like a kid in a candy shop!

Kate spoke with the group about two key elements that have the greatest impact on an image; composition and use of natural light. After taking us through composition and light, we ventured to a nearby park with cameras in hand to put our new knowledge into practice. We took many portraits, both staged and candid, before heading back to Kate’s home for a lesson in flat-lay photography.

It was such an enjoyable day that was truly inspiring! Even though I had to travel many miles to get there it was well worth the journey, I’m equipped with new skills and peers so I’m looking forward to putting my insights into action!
